Okay, so considering Jaden Yuki is my spirit animal, I think it’s about time I started watching YGO GX. 

I saw a few episodes of the 4Kids dub, and it wasn’t… that bad. It wasn’t great, but I think I can live with it. 

Is the Japanese sub better, though? Like, should I just be watching it in Japanese? I mean, I’m more familiar with the English names, but it won’t be difficult for me to switch. I still prefer the name Jaden to Judai though…

So some help here? Dub or sub?

Sub! Definitely sub, all the way! The dub has a few funny moments, but they’re unfortunately drowned out in a sea of mediocrity, bad puns and character stereotypes (the best example I can think of is the main female character being turned from a serious, no-nonsense duelist and good student to a stereotypical blonde, fashion-obsessed airhead). This becomes even worse as the series goes on and characters start to develop out of their initial roles.

The episodes from 01 up to 163 can all be found here, with very good subtitles. GLL99 is working on finishing work on the series, so if you get to that point before he’s done, the GX_ST group have the rest of the episodes up on Dailymotion as well.

Also, you will love Judai’s development, this I can guarantee. Some of the best subversion of the ‘gotta be a master’ trope I’ve ever seen in shounen anime.
